Our Story

WHO WE ARE TODAY

The life and mission of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation is inspired today, as it always has been, by the mystery of the Eucharist. This gracious gift of the Lord sustains our life together. It nourishes our personal prayer and animates our mission in the church. Drawn by the love of the Eucharist, we commit ourselves to live in community as priests, deacons and brothers. We pledge ourselves to pray in communion with the Lord and to break bread for the life of the world, as Jesus commanded. In all this we follow in the footsteps of our founder, St Peter Julian Eymard.

From its tiny beginnings in Paris in 1856, the Congregation has spread around the world to every continent, including Australia. In the words of our Rule, ‘our mission is to respond to the hungers of humanity with the riches of God’s love manifested in the Eucharist’ (#3).

WHAT WE DO

In addition to serving the daily needs of the church, the Congregation conducts outreach ministries to tertiary students and young working adults. Bible study and education-in-faith classes are offered. Assistance is also available, on request, before marriage and baptism.

Several masses are celebrated throughout the week including a mass in Cantonese and another in Korean. Each month, two additional masses are celebrated in Indonesian and one mass in Filipino. You can find more details on our Mass Times page.

Sacramental reconciliation (confession) is available at advertised times on most days of the week.

JOIN US IN PRAYER

The public are invited to join the religious community in the morning and evening prayer of the church on weekdays, and to participate in regular devotions including a weekly novena and a prayer group.

A priest is available for consultation during office hours, Monday to Saturday (or at other times by appointment).

Outside the rostered times of daily masses and other services, St Peter Julian’s Church is an oasis of silence and peace in the centre of the city, a place of welcome and meeting, and a shrine of prayer and adoration in the setting of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
